Imam Abu Yusuf answered by saying, “I do not know.” The assistant to the Caliph said to Abu Yusuf: “You have a salary and you say you do not know.” In response, the great scholar Abu Yusuf said: “My salary is according to my knowledge. If it were according to my ignorance, the treasury of the state would not suffice.”
